The FootFlex P.S.D. was developed in the late
80's by World Class Distance runner Jim Cooper,
with assistance from Dr. Perry H. Julien, D.P.M.,
of the Atlanta Foot and Ankle Center. Following a
severe case of plantar facsiitis, which Jim had
developed while preparing for the 1988 U.S.
Olympic Trials, stretching of the lower lower leg
was emphasized as an important part of his
rehabilitation.Being both an athlete and
a mechanical engineer, Jim developed the FootFlex
P.S.D. in an attempt to maximize the isolation of
stretch in the muscle groups of the lower leg.
The maximization of this stretch, in unison with
flexing the toes upward ("the wind-last
effect"), provided for a biomechanically
correct position allowing a thorough stretch of
the lower leg muscle complex and increased
flexibility. By increasing flexibility in this
region, Jim was not only able to rehabilitate the
injury but also prevent other common lower
extremity overuse injuries in the future.
